London Super Comic Con 2014

Those of you who haven’t heard of LSCC, the London Super Comic Convention is a comics only convention, with its debut in the UK in 2012. The convention focuses on U.S and European creators, exhibitors, publishers and dealers for comics, merchandise and now cosplay.

The event is organised by a team comprised of U.K and U.S comic book professionals and fans with experience in hosting creator-driven shows dating back to the 1990s. This event is the UK’s equivalent to San Diego’s Comic-Con, not quite matching the scale yet but definitely an enjoyable experience.

With a wide range of over 100 small press independent comic publishers and creators from the UK and USA, we have a mixture of top comic retailers, mainstream, underground and independent artists too, here to sell their wares and sign an autograph or two. This time The Walking Dead artist - Charlie Adlard has been the favourite for people to make massive queues from, starting as a UK artist for Judge Dredd he is now an Eisner-nominated artist.

Some more familiar UK talents include Neil Gibson of Twisted Dark, showcasing his gruesome horror short stories alongside promoting his kickstarter project TORTURED LIFE. Tortured Life is a 6 issue Miniseries / Graphic Novel about an everyday guy called Richard Carter who has the supernatural power of seeing how people are going to die.  The kickstarter has reached it’s goal plus more so hopefully we’ll be seeing this comic soon.

Tribute to anime Magi by Valeriya

Valeriya a regular exhibitor at MCM is study animation at Central Saint Martins but tries to fit in as many conventions to her schedule including LSCC with her manga-esque style of art, selling her comics, prints and taking commissions for portraits.

Amongst the comics and merchandise the reason I had turned up to LSCC was to explore the new cosplay scene. Since the announcement of the prize – two tickets to Dragon Con in America including all paid for airline tickets and inclusive hotel, this all caused a buzz in the cosplay scene. Once the judges were announced cosplayers became determined to enter or backed off in fear of criticism but who can blame them? When your faced with the likes of American cosplay high flyers Yaya Han and Riddle.

The Judges: Tabitha Lyons from Artfakes, Yaya Han and Riddle

They whittled away the steep competition down to 10 finalists frozen duo from france, a separate Elza from Frozen, cat woman, pin up super girl, Lady Weeds from Swamp thing, Deathstroke, She Ra, Hyper Girl, Tali'Zorah from Mass Effect and Maliketh from Thor 2. Girl power prevailed and ten contestants repeated their acts to the Judges Yaya Han, Riddle and Uk cosplayer Tabitha Lyons from Artyfakes.

The judges had extreme difficulty announcing the winners as it was a matter of one point which separated first place from second. Third came the highly amusing dancer Yel Zamoor as Hyper Girl an original comic character in a full suit of robotic armour. Second came Laura Sindall and Cosplex as She-Ra and the Goddess with their impressive scene from She ra and confetti blast from the well made props. First were one of the French entries Nikita and Annshella as Anna and Elsa from Frozen. They wowed us with more than one outfit each and a great reversible prop background. The biggest shock was they transported it all from France. An adventure for them which was well worth it!

Everything about the event was professional and on a manageable scale at the Excel, no problems were incurred by cosplayers or staff. A special thanks goes to Sony for providing the top three with the prizes of PS3’s and Playstation vitas and Gary the guy who organised alot of the event.
